JEANNE JOLLY Singer/songwriter Jeanne Jolly crafts soulful folk-pop laced with heartfelt lyricism and a dash of Appalachian Americana. She’s a North Carolina native based in Raleigh, but this isn’t a case of the apple not falling far from the tree. Classically trained at the New England Conservatory of Music, Jolly’s been around the block, singing back-up with jazz trumpeter Chris Botti and cutting tracks in Los Angeles before returning to her Carolina roots. Once home, Jolly honed her soul chops with Foreign Exchange, a Triangle R&B/hip-hop collective led by rapper Phonte Coleman of Little Brother fame. A powerful pop-country belter in the Linda Ronstadt/Dolly Parton vein, Jolly can easily shift to the dusky lilt of Alison Krauss or the sophisticated jazz phrasing of Ricki Lee Jones. All this experience, plus influences as diverse as Nina Simone and Joni Mitchell, coalesce in Jolly’s current LP Angels. Clear-eyed and empathetic, Jolly’s songs reflect on the angels that affect our lives, leaving the definition of “angel” open to each listener. While her jazz background informs the vocals on Angels, the arrangements and instrumentation—keyed by a list of sterling locals, including Chris Boerner, Allyn Love, Matt McCaughan and James Wallace—draw more upon her North Carolina roots. The voice is also the stand-out feature of our other returning artist, Jeanne Jolly from Raleigh, North Carolina … Jeanne’s new album, out now on +FE Music, is called “Angels” and it is a very worthy follow-up to last year’s “Falling in Carolina”. Much of the album is in the folk/country style we would expect, but on a few tracks she expands the musical palette and generally it works well. Never better than on the single, “Sweet Love”, which harks back to her early days as a jazz singer. It has a really nice vibe to it and suits her voice extremely well. link to article
